Luksic Scholars Foundation launches new Luksic Scholarship for a Master’s in Business Analytics + Data Analytics Certificate taught by the University of Chile and MIT

  • This Master’s program is focused on professionals who are looking to deepen their knowledge in data analysis for strategic decision-making within organizations. Classes begin on September 8, 2023.
  • As part of the academic experience, students will visit the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) campus in Cambridge, USA for two weeks to complete the international module that the Master’s degree includes.

“Data revolution” has become a widespread term used in recent years and responds to a growing global trend: the explosion of the volume of data that is available, the increase in speed at which data is created and disseminated, and the increasingly greater ability to store and process data to extract their value. In this context, it has become essential for organizations, both public and private, to have professionals and executives who have the knowledge and experience to meet this challenge.

The new program “Luksic Scholarship at the University of Chile — MIT – Master’s in Business Analytics” was created in response to this phenomenon and aims to provide the necessary resources and tools for four Chilean professionals (or individuals with permanent residence in Chile) to deepen their knowledge for strategic decision-making based on data and at the same time live an international experience through a two-week visit to the MIT campus in Cambridge.

The Master’s in Business Analytics is taught by the Faculty of Physical and Mathematical Sciences (FCFM) and the Faculty of Economics and Business (FEN) of the University of Chile, and the Data Analytics Certificate is taught by both faculties in collaboration with MIT’s Sloan School of Management (MSLAO).

“We are extremely pleased to offer scholarships to our students so that they can access two innovative programs in which the Faculty of Economics and Business and the Faculty of Physical and Mathematical Sciences of the University of Chile come together, namely the Master’s in Business Analytics and the Data Analytics Certificate, which includes an international module carried out on MIT’s campus in the USA.

These scholarships allow us to promote more equitable access to knowledge and enhance the use of analytics in strategic decision-making in both the public and private sectors. We are committed to bringing these opportunities closer to our students so that they can contribute to the development and progress of our society,” says Rodrigo Uribe, Director of the Postgraduate School at the Faculty of Economics and Business of the University of Chile.

The four scholarships provided by the Luksic Scholars Foundation cover the entire tuition fee for both the Master’s and the Data Analytics Certificate, which is carried out as an international module on MIT’s campus. Those who are granted the Luksic Scholarship must commit to carrying out their thesis on a topic that has a public impact in Chile and give a lecture or master class on Data Analytics to one of the member universities of the Consortium of Chilean State Universities (CUECH).

“We are very pleased to announce the launch of this new program developed in collaboration with two institutions with which we have formed a relationship for over a decade: the University of Chile and MIT. This program responds to the challenges posed by the ‘data age’ in which we currently live and we trust that it will be a rewarding experience for the participants,” comments Trinidad García, the Program Development Lead for the Luksic Scholars Foundation.

To apply to the Master’s program and to the Luksic Scholarship, candidates must have a Bachelor’s degree or equivalent professional degree either granted in Chile or abroad with a minimum duration of eight semesters. In addition, candidates must have at least two years of work experience. Applications to both the Master’s program and the four Luksic Scholarships are open until August 6 at 11:59 pm CLT.

The Faculty of Economics and Business (FEN) of the University of Chile has arranged three scholarships for those candidates who are admitted into the Master’s programs in Business Analytics and Data Analytics Certificate each year. These scholarships cover a percentage of the tuition and fees of both programs, as well as the international module that is carried out at MIT.

The application to the Master’s in Business Analytics is carried out by the FEN Graduate Application System of the University of Chile. Candidates wishing to apply for the scholarships provided by the Luksic Scholars Foundation and FEN must also complete the form available at this link (information available in Spanish only).

Welcome to the 12 new Luksic Scholars who will soon begin their Master’s programs abroad!

The new generation of Luksic Scholars will be studying their Master’s programs at London School of Economics (LSE), Oxford University, Sciences Po and Schwarzman Scholars during the 2023/24 academic year. During a welcome breakfast, organized by the Luksic Scholars Foundation, the participants were able to hear testimonials from Scholars who have already lived these experiences.

The Foundation organized a morning for the recipients of scholarship programs offered in partnership with different universities around the world to get to know each other, meet former Luksic Scholars and be officially welcomed into the Luksic Scholars Community. In total, 12 Scholars will travel to China, France and the United Kingdom over the next few months to begin their Master’s degrees, expand their knowledge, and take part in an international academic experience.

These Chilean students will study Master’s degree programs at LSE, Sciences Po, Schwarzman Scholars, and the Blavatnik School of Government at University of Oxford in the fields of Public Administration; Public Policy; International Energy; and International Governance and Diplomacy.

“At the Luksic Scholars Foundation we aim to provide opportunities that connect Chile with the world. That’s why we have developed several scholarship programs in collaboration with universities that seek to form leaders and change agents in their respective fields. We are pleased to welcome a new generation of Luksic Scholars and we hope that the academic experience they will soon start will contribute to their professional and personal careers”, said Isabella Luksic, Executive Director of the Luksic Scholars Foundation.

Andreas Guillén, from the Maule Region in Chile, is one of the Scholars who will begin studying a Master in International Governance and Diplomacy at Sciences Po in September. Andreas arrived in France in September 2020, after being awarded the Sciences Po Quiñenco Scholarship for Chile. As part of the program, he first pursued his Bachelor’s degree in Social Sciences and will now complete a postgraduate degree.

“The experience has been excellent and has allowed me to grow as a person,” Andreas emphasized. “This program has given me a global outlook, with Latin American, African, European, Asian, and Arabic points of view and I have been able to gain a lot of cultural richness. I think the Master’s program will allow me to deepen my knowledge in political analysis and public policy formulation. It will be interesting to connect what I have already learned in the Bachelor’s program regarding Latin America with the experience of the Middle East, which is what I will concentrate on now,” he added.

During the event, three Luksic Scholars who are either currently studying or have finalized their  Master’s programs shared their stories. The new Luksic Scholars were able to hear from Ricardo Batarce, who completed the Master in Public Policy at the University of Oxford in 2017; Josefina Hübner, who completed the Master in Public Policy at LSE in 2020, and Santiago Mendía, who joined the Master in Public Policy at Sciences Po in 2022 and is projected to finalize his studies in 2024.

Babson College has trained more than 800 Chilean academics over the past decade to strengthen entrepreneurship education in Chile

Since 2006, the Luksic Scholars Foundation has supported 18 versions of Babson College’s Symposium for Entrepreneurship Educators (SEE) program in Chile: 13 editions of Babson SEE Chile held in various parts of the country and 5 editions of Babson SEE Antofagasta which has been carried out in collaboration with the Technology Licensing Office of the University of Antofagasta (OTL-UA). Throughout these years, these programs have had participants from all over Chile, and have ended up promoting the development of knowledge, as well as international collaboration and networking.

The importance of teaching by connecting theory with practice, the value of learning from failure, and the art of delivering a good pitch were part of the main themes taught throughout the 18 versions of the Babson SEE Chile & Antofagasta programs. Over the past decade, more than 800 academics from across the country were part of this international collaboration between the Luksic Scholars Foundation and Babson College, a renowned university in the US.

Via lectures given by expert entrepreneurship professors, Andrew Corbett and Matthew Allen, as well as through dynamic classroom activities and the opportunity to network, Babson SEE participants were able to learn innovative teaching methodologies to implement in their classrooms and promote entrepreneurship in Chile.

Isabella Luksic, Executive Director of the Luksic Scholars Foundation, noted that “at the Luksic Scholars Foundation, we want to create more and better opportunities that continue contributing to the development of knowledge in our country. That is why we are dedicated to connecting Chile with internationally renowned academic organizations such as Babson College, with whom we share the vision that entrepreneurs are the driving force of their countries and play a leading role in changing the world.”

One of Babson College’s goals in developing these Symposia in Chile and other countries around the world is to create an increasingly larger international network of innovative entrepreneurship educators who understand the importance of bridging theory and practice in teaching.

“The goal of the Symposium for Entrepreneurship Educators (SEE) has always been to support Chilean academics so they can empower and promote entrepreneurs throughout the country. We hope that over the years, thousands of people in Chile have been able to benefit from this collaboration with the Luksic Scholars Foundation,” emphasized Andrew Corbett, Paul T. Babson Distinguished Professor of Entrepreneurial Studies, during the closing ceremony of the program held on Friday, June 16th in Santiago, Chile. Over 80 people participated in the event, both in person and virtually.

The latest version of the SEE Antofagasta program took place between May 15th and May 19th with over 40 participants from the northern region of Chile, and the most recent version of the SEE Chile program took place in Viña del Mar from June 12th to June 15th in which more than 40 academics from the Valparaíso, Metropolitan, O’Higgins, and Biobío regions participated.

Gustavo Callejas, partner and Founder of Mantahua OTEC, was one of the participants of the SEE Chile program in Viña del Mar. “I connected a lot with everything we did and learned this week. I take away concepts that are very powerful for me, for example: understanding entrepreneurship as a tool for social mobility, and also the value of integrating intergenerational aspects as a tool that allows us to showcase what we do better.”

Through the Babson SEE program, the Luksic Scholars Foundation has been able to contribute to the development of entrepreneurship in Chile from an educational point of view. This work has also been complemented by the various initiatives carried out by the Luksic Foundation which supports entrepreneurs throughout Chile with funding, mentorship, and training.

The Luksic Scholars Foundation’s vision is that through a Chile better connected with international academia, it will be possible to respond to the global challenges of the 21st century, and as such, the Foundation promotes networks and opportunities in collaboration with institutions from around the world to strengthen the development of people and knowledge.

By visiting www.luksicscholars.org, you can find more information about the Foundation’s current scholarship, institutional strengthening, and research programs.

In addition to the programs mentioned above, the Luksic Scholars Foundation and Babson College have also carried out the following opportunities:

  • Babson Luksic Fellows (2011 -2024) – Each year, individuals who participate in the Babson Symposia in Chile can apply to the Babson Luksic Fellows program. This is an on-campus opportunity at Babson College in Massachusetts, USA. In its first iteration, from 2011 to 2015, a maximum of two participants spent a full semester immersed in life at Babson. From 2016 onwards, in order to allow more people to take part, 10 spaces have been offered for a week-long agenda. To date, there have been 12 versions (1 remaining for the year 2024), and 69 participants.
  • Babson Case Writing Workshop (2009, 2010) – From April 2009 to March 2010, a year-long workshop was carried out to provide an opportunity for Chilean university professors to develop pedagogical skills and resources in Entrepreneurship and the Case Teaching methodology. 28 individuals took part during which time they worked in groups with Chilean entrepreneurs to develop a series of case studies that were later published as a teaching asset.

International Symposium on Entrepreneurship Education returns with its latest version to train professors in the northern region of Chile

The symposium will be held in Antofagasta and will be taught by experts from Babson College in the United States. Academics representing various universities from Arica to La Serena will partake.

This year, Babson College, a leading university in teaching entrepreneurship worldwide, will carry out its fifth and final version of the esteemed “Symposium for Entrepreneurship Educators” in Antofagasta for professors located in the northern zone of Chile.

The program, organized by the University of Antofagasta (UA) through the Vice-Rectorate of Research, Innovation and Postgraduate Studies and its Office of Transfer and Licensing (OTL) in partnership with the Luksic Scholars Foundation, will take place from May 15th to 19th at the Hotel Terrado in Antofagasta.

The Vice-Rector for Research, Innovation and Postgraduate Studies at the University of Antofagasta, Dr. Rodrigo Iturriaga Agüera, says that this fifth and final version will mark a milestone for the university, as this experience has laid the foundations for creating new partnerships with institutions of higher education of international status in emerging areas of study such as innovation and entrepreneurship.

“We have partnered with Babson College and the Luksic Scholars Foundation through a high-level training program. This has allowed us, as a public and state university, to fulfill our mission of contributing with new knowledge and tools, as well as leaving an imprint in our community and, in this case, generating a positive impact on teachers from various educational institutions throughout the northern macrozone,” he comments.

The Executive Director of the Luksic Scholars Foundation, Isabella Luksic, stated that “in its four previous versions, the Babson SEE Antofagasta program has reached more than 180 academics, administrators, researchers, and teachers from the northern regions of Chile. In working with the University of Antofagasta, we have been able to bring the methodology of entrepreneurship education closer to the participants, providing them with the knowledge and tools needed to face the local challenges of today.”

BIOTECHNOLOGY

This fifth edition will focus on biotechnology and involve professors from various educational institutions spanning the Arica and Parinacota regions to Coquimbo. Participants will have a unique learning opportunity to foster a strong entrepreneurial mindset among their students, thereby transforming undergraduate and graduate education with an entrepreneurial approach.

The main objective of the program is to promote entrepreneurship and economic development in Chile, especially in the northern zone of the country through the innovative business education provided by Babson College.

Alejandra Portillo, Director of the UA’s Office of Transfer and Licensing, states that “we are very excited about this fifth edition, as the previous ones have been very successful and with a great turnout.”

“Our main objective has always been for professors to acquire new knowledge and perspectives on the topics addressed at the end of this seminar, and we have achieved this in all of the previous editions that have been carried out,” she added.

EXPERTS

As in previous years, the classes will be taught by expert academics from Babson College in innovation and entrepreneurship: Andrew Corbett, President of the Entrepreneurship Division, and Matthew Allen, Associate Professor in the Academic Division of Entrepreneurship.

In addition, the experts will visit the UA’s R&D Centers, where the Directors of each unit will show and explain their lines of research, experience and scientific developments, and innovation projects developed and carried out.

Babson College is one of the most important entrepreneurship universities in the world, known for its innovative educational model aimed at promoting learning and innovation. They seek to develop a growing international network of educators specialized in innovative entrepreneurship and as such, have been carrying out this seminar in various countries around the world, such as Ireland, China, Russia, Scotland, Switzerland, Malaysia, Costa Rica, Puerto Rico, Venezuela, Ecuador, and Argentina.
