The Luksic Visiting Scholars Program at Stanford’s Center for Latin American Studies (CLAS) is an opportunity for academics or professors from any academic discipline to spend four months at Stanford University. While on campus, Luksic Visiting Scholars will have access to a wide array of experts, libraries, and other archives to conduct their research.

Up to two Visiting Scholars from Chilean institutions are named. If the research proposals allow, it is encouraged for both Scholars to arrive at Stanford on a similar date to encourage cohort dynamics.

Eligibility: Preference is given to Chilean nationals or residents working at Chilean institutions. However, academics working abroad (outside Chile) at Chilean institutions are eligible to apply. Applicants must hold a doctorate and a current academic appointment at a university or research institution. Independent scholars may request to have this requirement waived based on their professional trajectory.

Academics can be from any scientific discipline or academic field. Applicants must explain how they will engage in research at Stanford University during the program. Those who provide information on how their research experience at Stanford can benefit their institution’s or Chile’s development will be prioritized. Women and researchers from regional institutions in Chile are especially encouraged to apply.

Duration: One-quarter of four months. Scholars can begin their four-month research period in September, January, or April to coincide with the Fall, Winter, and Spring/ Quarters at Stanford.

Program support: The Luksic Visiting Scholars Program provides the selected academic with a complete compensation package which includes an allowance, housing support, transportation support, and library access.

Application process & requirements: All interested candidates must apply directly to Stanford CLAS. Applications for the 2024-2025 academic year are closed. • Statement of Purpose: A brief proposal (one to two pages) explaining in detail the reason of interest in becoming a LVSF at CLAS, elaborating on the line of research to follow while associated with the Stanford University. Proposals should state how the proposed research benefits from Stanford’s unique resources such as libraries, faculty, and academic programs.
  • Letter of Sponsorship or List of Faculty: nomination endorsement by a Stanford University faculty member, either affiliated or not affiliated to CLAS, or in lieu of the letter of endorsement, applicants may submit a list of two to three Stanford faculty members and their Department with whom they would like to collaborate or associate.
  • Letter of Recommendation: nomination endorsement from the nominee’s institution, preferably from a Dean or Chair.
  • Curriculum Vitae
  • Evidence of English proficiency

Selection process: The selection process is competitive on the basis of professional trajectory and the quality of the proposed research plan. A Selection Panel established by CLAS and without the participation of the Luksic Scholars Foundation will make all awarding decisions.
