In 2000, the Luksic family endowed a fellowship fund at Harvard’s David Rockefeller Center for Latin American Studies to support one Luksic Visiting Scholar from Chile every semester on campus in Cambridge. These Visiting Scholars are provided with the tools and resources to conduct a research project in their area of expertise and further their academic interests as experts in their fields, such as a shared office space, library borrowing privileges, access to University facilities and events, and opportunities to audit classes and attend seminars in the Faculty of Arts and Sciences and in other Harvard professional schools.
Each year, Harvard DRCLAS competitively selects Visiting Scholars based on applicant qualifications, the quality of an applicant’s research plans, and the relevance of both to the Center’s mission and objectives.
Scholars must hold a Ph.D. and be proficient in both written and spoken English as each Scholar will give a lecture in English on a topic related to their research and are encouraged to be available for informal consultation by faculty and students with related interests.
The residential fellowships cover round-trip travel expenses (taxable), emergency-only health insurance coverage (for foreign Visiting Scholars and accompanying immediate family), and a taxable living stipend while at Harvard. Scholars are expected to spend a full semester on campus (Fall: September-December, Spring: January- May). Funding obtained from additional personal resources is permitted.
Applications for the 2025-2026 academic year are closed. Applications for the next academic year will open around July 2025. Interested candidates must apply directly to Harvard DRCLAS. Prepare your application here.
Please note that this is not a postdoc program. Current Ph.D. students, and recent Ph.D. graduates are generally not suitable candidates for the Visiting Scholars program.
Information sessions have been carried out in collaboration with Harvard DRCLAS. They include a presentation from Harvard DRCLAS and conversations with Luksic Scholars regarding the application process and their program experience: 2023 recording here / 2022 recording here.
Candidates will be awarded scholarships and/or funding directly from the university to which they apply. The university is exclusively responsible for selection and admissions decisions, and does so at its complete discretion and, subject only to the eligibility conditions established by the respective program. The Luksic Scholars Foundation has no participation or influence in the application processes, admissions decisions, or awarding of scholarships.
