Peter Weill and Sinan Aral will discuss Sinan\u2019s new book, The Hype Machine: How Social Media Disrupts Our Elections, Our Economy, and Our Health\u2014and How We Must Adapt (available on September 15). Sinan is the director of MIT\u2019s Initiative on the Digital Economy (IDE) and will help us take stock of social media\u2019s ascendance and provide clear-eyed prescriptions for how we can protect ourselves and democracy from fake news deception and social media manipulation.<\/p>\n

\nSinan Aral is a scientist, entrepreneur and investor. He is the David Austin Professor of Management at MIT, Director of the MIT Initiative on the Digital Economy (IDE) and a founding partner at Manifest Capital. He was the Chief Scientist at SocialAmp (until its sale to Merkle in 2012) and at Humin (until its sale to Tinder in 2016). He currently serves on the Advisory Boards of the Alan Turing Institute, the British National Institute for Data Science in London, the Centre for Responsible Media Technology and Innovation in Bergen, Norway and C6 Bank, one of the first all-digital banks of Brazil. <\/p>\n

\nPeter Weill is Chairman and Senior Research Scientist at the MIT Sloan Center for Information Systems Research (CISR). Peter joined the faculty of the MIT Sloan School of Management in 2000 as director of MIT CISR, of which he became chairman in 2008. Peter\u2019s current responsibilities include the globalization of MIT CISR\u2019s research and sponsorship base and engagement with senior executive teams.
