The steep reduction in greenhouse gas emissions needed to meet the Paris temperature targets will require deep decarbonization – moving away from fossil fuels in every sector of the world’s economies. National and subnational governments will have to adopt new laws in order to implement decarbonization policies, or to interpret existing laws in certain ways.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
This event, held in the context of COP25, will consider the multiple legal tools that are available to achieve these objectives. The starting point will be a comprehensive book recently published by the Environmental Law Institute, Legal Pathways to Deep Decarbonization in the United States, which contains more than 1,000 specific recommendations for legal action at the federal, state and local levels.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
More than 20 US law firms have joined a new project on a pro bono basis to draft the model laws needed to implement these recommendations. One of the topics under discussion will be whether similar work should be undertaken in other countries, and how such work could be organized.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
